A marathon auction in an inner-city Brisbane suburb has sold for $5.85m under the hammer.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom home at 42 Stewart Street, Hawthorne, sold under the hammer in an auction lasting for 70 minutes.

The auction had six bidders registered, with three active throughout the auction.

Auctioneer Haesley Cush from Ray White said the sale today at 42 Stewart Street, Hawthorne demonstrated that the confidence in Brisbane’s property market was ‘very much there’.

The sellers, Tim and Tegun Geary, had designed and built the home and said they were over the moon with the result.

Property agent Brandon Wortley from Ray White The Collective said the entire street was packed during the auction.

“There were about 300 people in the crowd,” Mr Wortley said.

“We had 200 inspections in three weeks; the market came to play today.

“The street is a real unicorn street for Hawthorne, and the sellers always wanted to do a project on this street.

“It’s quite a large home and was built by a highly regarded architect and builder.

“Tegun and Tim designed everything themselves in consultation with their builder and architect.”

Auctioneer Haesley Cush said the prestige market was still really strong.

“It was a huge turnout today, 300 people,” Mr Cush said.

“We had locals here today, interstate buyers too.

“We had people here that are building locally, wanting to see the confidence in the market if they do the build. That confidence is still very much there.

“The owners took great comfort in selling today because they had an enormous crowd; they had six registered bidders, and those bidders participated.

Mr Cush said although the auction went well, it did need to hit pause to negotiate.

“We did need to push pause; that pause got us another $200,000,” he said.

The winning bid went to a family from North Queensland that was bidding over the phone.

The large kitchen at 42 Stewart Street, Hawthorne has a large kitchen offering abundant storage and benchspace with appliances from Miele and Siemens.

Korea’s Setopia Concerns mount over China’s dominance of strategic minerals HANOI, Sept 25 (Reuters) – Vietnam plans to restart its biggest rare-earths mine next year with a Western-backed project that could rival the world’s largest, according to two companies involved, as part of a broader push to dent China’s dominance in a sector that helps power advanced technologies. The move would be a step toward the Southeast Asian country’s aim of building up a rare-earths supply chain, including developing its capacity to refine ores into metals used in magnets for electric vehicles, smartphones and wind turbines. As an initial step, Vietnam’s government intends to launch tenders for multiple blocks of its Dong Pao mine before the year’s end, said Te...

Even 1.4 billion people ‘probably can’t fill’ all of China’s vacant homes, ex-official admits

Even China’s population of 1.4 billion would not be enough to fill all the empty apartments littered across the country, a former official said on Saturday, in a rare public critique of the country’s crisis-hit property market. China’s property sector, once the pillar of the economy, has slumped since 2021 when real estate giant China Evergrande Group defaulted on its debt obligations following a clampdown on new borrowing. Big-name developers such as Country Garden Holdings continue to teeter close to default even to this day, keeping home-buyer sentiment depressed. As of the end of August, the combined floor area of unsold homes stood at 648 million square meters (7 billion square feet), the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show. That would be equal to 7.2 million homes, according to Reuters calculations, based on the average home size of 90 square meters ...
